Swimming Pool Dosing Chart

This document is designed as a quick start-up guide to chemically dosing your above ground swimming pool.

Step 1

Calculate your swimming pool volume, you can use our online pool volume calculator for this.

  1. Round Pool:
  • Diameter (m) x Diameter (m) x Average Depth (m) x 0.8
    • (E.g. 3 metres x 3 metres x 1 metre x 0.8 = 7.2m3 or 7,200 litres)
  • Diameter (ft) x Diameter (ft) x Average Depth (ft) x 4.9
    • (E.g. 12ft x 12ft x 3.5ft x 4.9 = 2,470 gallons)
  1. Rectangular Pool:
  • Length (m) x Width (m) x Average Depth (m)
    • (E.g. 5 metres x 3.5 metres x 1.2 metre= 21m3 or 21,000 litres)
  • Length (ft) x Width (ft) x Average Depth (ft) x 6.25
    • (E.g. 18ft x 10ft x 4ft x 6.25 = 4,500 gallons)

Step 2

Add an initial (Starter/Shock) dose of Pool Elements Stabilised Chlorine Granules

Once the pool has been erected and filled with water, a starter dose of Pool Elements Stabilised Chlorine Granules should be added to the pool water. If the pool is taking time to fill, add the Stabilised Chlorine Granules once the pool is half filled following the instructions on the container.

Step 3

Add an initial dose of Pool Elements Regular Al.gaecide

Algae are microscopic forms of plant life that can multiply quickly in untreated pool water. An initial dose of Pool Elements Regular Algaecide, followed by a weekly top-up dose will help keep algae at bay.

* Daily Stabilised Chlorine dose rates will vary depending on weather, how much the pool is used, water temperature etc.

TIP: Test your swimming pool water daily using Pool Elements 3 Way Test Strips or a Chlorine/pH Pooltester and adjust chemical additions according to the test results.

CAUTION: Wait a minimum of 1 - 2 hours after chemical additions (with circulation & filtration running) before bathing recommences and only then if chlorine (sanitiser) and pH levels are within range.

Pool Chlorine PPM Calculator - Usage

  1. First, enter the number of gallons in your pool in the "Pool Gallons" field.
  2. Next, enter your current free chlorine level in the "Current Free Chlorine Level" field. You can find this out by using a pool test kit or test strips.
  3. Enter the desired free chlorine level for your pool in the "Desired Free Chlorine Level" field. This is the amount of free chlorine you want in your pool to maintain proper sanitation.
  4. Select the type of chlorine you will be using from the "Select A Chlorine Type" options. The strength of the chlorine you use will depend on the type of chlorine you are using. The options in the drop-down menu correspond to the available chlorine percentage in the product you are using.
  5. Click the "Calculate" button to find out how much chlorine to add to your pool.
  6. The "Chlorine Amount" field will display the amount of chlorine you need to add to your pool in ounces.

Information on Different Types of Pool Chlorine

And the pros and cons of each type. Some possible types of chlorine include:

  1. Bleach: a readily available and affordable option, but can be unstable in sunlight and may require more frequent application
  2. Trichlor: a slow-dissolving option that is easy to use, but can cause pH and alkalinity levels to decrease over time
  3. Dichlor: a fast-dissolving option that is good for regular maintenance, but can cause cyanuric acid levels to increase over time
  4. Cal-hypo: a granular option that is good for shock treatment, but can cause calcium levels to increase over time
  5. Chlorine gas: a highly effective option for large pools, but requires special equipment and can be dangerous if not handled properly

Safety information

You could provide information on the importance of proper pool chemical handling and storage, and the potential hazards associated with mishandling pool chemicals. Some possible safety tips include:

  1. Always wear gloves and eye protection when handling pool chemicals
  2. Store pool chemicals in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from children and pets
  3. Do not mix different types of pool chemicals together
  4. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper use and application of pool chemicals
  5. In case of accidental exposure or ingestion, seek medical attention immediately

Tips for Maintaining Proper Pool Chemistry

List of tips for maintaining proper pool chemistry, which can help prevent the growth of algae and bacteria in the pool. Some possible tips include:

  1. Test your pool water regularly to ensure proper chemical balance
  2. Keep your pool clean by regularly skimming and vacuuming debris
  3. Maintain proper pH and alkalinity levels to ensure the effectiveness of chlorine
  4. Use a pool cover to reduce evaporation and keep debris out of the pool
  5. Shock your pool after heavy use or when free chlorine levels are low

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do I use the Chlorine Mixing Calculator?

To use the Chlorine Mixing Calculator, simply enter the pool's volume in gallons, the current free chlorine level, the desired free chlorine level, and the chlorine strength in the provided fields. Then click on the "Calculate" button to get the amount of chlorine required. The calculator will give you the result in ounces.

What is free chlorine?

Free chlorine refers to the amount of chlorine in a pool that is available to sanitize the water. It includes hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite ion, which are the active forms of chlorine.

What is the ideal free chlorine level for a swimming pool?

The ideal free chlorine level for a swimming pool is between 2 and 4 parts per million (ppm). This level helps to keep the water safe and clean by killing harmful bacteria and algae.

What is chlorine strength?

Chlorine strength refers to the percentage of available chlorine in a specific chlorine product. For example, a 10% chlorine solution means that 10% of the product is available chlorine.

How much chlorine should I add to my pool?

The amount of chlorine required for a pool depends on its volume, current free chlorine level, desired free chlorine level, and the chlorine strength. You can use the Chlorine Mixing Calculator to determine the exact amount of chlorine needed for your pool.

How often should I add chlorine to my pool?

The frequency of adding chlorine to a pool depends on several factors, including the pool's usage, temperature, and exposure to sunlight. Generally, it is recommended to add chlorine every day or every other day to maintain a consistent free chlorine level.

What are the different types of chlorine available for swimming pools?

The different types of chlorine available for swimming pools include bleach, trichlor, dichlor, cal-hypo, lithium-hypo, and chlorine gas. Each type has different strengths and uses, so it's important to choose the right one for your pool's needs.

How do I handle chlorine safely?

Chlorine should always be handled with care and caution. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully and wear protective clothing, including gloves and goggles. Store chlorine in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and other chemicals. Additionally, keep it out of reach of children and pets.
